Question
My house has textured ceilings can they be painted with latex paint?

Answer
If the ceiling has any discoloration like water stains, cigarette smoke etc, don’t allow use an acrylic product on it.  Water based acrylic will not seal the stains and they will all eventually bleed through in a few days.  We recommend a product like Fresh–tex which is designed to be rolled or sprayed over these ceilings.  If the ceilings are not stained but you just want to freshen them up then we use a flat (matte) finish acrylic ceiling paint.

Question

My home has oil paint on the walls and trim, can I put latex over oil?

Answer

Yes.  Many of today’s top-line acrylic latex products are formulated to be applied over properly prepared oil substrates.  Proper preparation is the key for adhesion of any product.  Dirty surfaces will need to be washed down with an appropriate cleanser then rinsed clean.  After the surface is dry it will need to be sanded thoroughly so the new paint finish has some “tooth” to bind onto.  Appropriate bonding primers are also and option depending on the condition of the existing oil finish.  An experienced painting contractor will be able to recommend the proper course of action.

Question

Isn’t painting just a DIY project?

Answer

It certainly can be for some small projects around the home.  However your home is the largest investment you will ever make and when it comes to re-sale a professional paint job done by skilled painters will make your home really show.

Question

Is there any paint that doesn’t smell?

Answer

Since there are no longer any oil paints for interior residential painting gone are the days of having a stinky house for weeks after a paint job.  The new generation of LOW VOC paints has made painting a virtually odor free experience.  The lower the VOC in paint the better odor control there will be in your home.  These “green” paints are designed for bedrooms, a nursery, and hospitals or anywhere an odor free finish is desired.
